CONCEPT
Cinema Africa 2007, featuring "Memories of Rwanda", is to be held on 7th April 2007, to keep and tell the memories of '94 Rwandan genocide.

Twelve years ago, on 6th April in 1994, the airplane carrying President Habyarimana was shot down, which then sparked the civil war in Rwanda. In the following massacre, more than 800,000 people were killed in one hundred days. After a decade of this tragic genocide, since around 2004, there has been a growing debate about the genocide, not only in Rwanda but also in Europe and the United States.
---What was the Rwandan genocide? Why did it happen? And why couldn't it be prevented?
To answer these questions, or simply to raise the questions, a number of publications have been produced, and films and documentaries are, no doubt, the most powerful and most appealing media leading these discussions.

In Japan, the year 2006 started with the film "Hotel Rwanda", causing a sensation especially among youth; however, this is just one of the numerous films about the genocide. There still are a number of genocide films to be known, which are more informative and thoughtful films unreleased in Japan. "Keepers of Memories" is an award-winning documentary, by a Rwandan director, Eric Kabera, who himself lost many of his family in the course of genocide. "Sometimes in April", directed by an African-Haitian director, Raoul Peck, is a Golden Berlin Bair-nominated film.

For this event, nine films are selected; eight of them unreleased in Japan, and all of them shot in Rwanda. The films, shot in the land of a thousand hills with the participation of many Rwandans, will tell you what Rwanda is exactly like, and how the tragic event actually happened. In addition to screenings, we will have a lecture/panel discussion by/with a Rwandan director, Eric Kabera, for everyone to know more about Rwanda, consequently more about Africa.

In Rwanda, they are trying to overcome the harrowing past. Among their steps toward reconciliation, is making or watching films. Films have power to let people start reflecting or talking about the genocide after long painful silence. Although things seem not to proceed so smoothly, but still, films can be a small help for proceeding. In Europe and US, making films itself is the act of questioning the past; what they should have done and what they should not have done. Now in Japan, we hope this festival will be a step to rethink that universal tragedy, which once occurred in Rwanda but can happen everywhere in the world.
